Honda SA Celebrates Global Innovation with Reusable Rocket Milestone

2025-09-03

Tokyo, Japan – 17 June 2025 – Honda R&D Co., Ltd., the research and development arm of Honda Motor Co., Ltd., has successfully launched and landed its first reusable rocket, marking a major step forward in aerospace innovation.

The experimental rocket reached an altitude of 271.4 m and landed within 37 cm of its target after a flight lasting 56.6 seconds, demonstrating exceptional precision and flight stability.

Precision Engineering in Action

The rocket measures 6.3 m in length and 85 cm in diameter, with a wet weight of 1,312 kg. The test validated key technologies for future reusable rockets, including real-time control during ascent and descent, and pinpoint landing accuracy—a crucial advancement toward suborbital flight.

Safe and Controlled Testing Environment

The launch took place at Honda’s facility in Taiki Town, Hokkaido Prefecture, an area renowned for aerospace testing in collaboration with JAXA, businesses, and universities. Safety was a priority, with a 1-kilometre buffer zone, access controls, and security measures in place to protect personnel and the surrounding community.

A Milestone for Honda and the Industry

This achievement makes Honda the first private Japanese company to successfully launch and land a reusable rocket. While commercial use has not been announced, Honda aims to develop a fully reusable suborbital rocket by 2029, paving the way for future aerospace ventures and highlighting the company’s dedication to engineering excellence and innovation.

Honda South Africa celebrates this global milestone as a reflection of the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation, precision engineering, and pushing the boundaries of technology beyond the automotive industry.
