Honda introduces innovative E-Clutch technology to South Africa

2026-07-08

Honda Motor Southern Africa is bringing a new level of riding innovation to local motorcyclists with the introduction of Honda E-Clutch technology on the 2026 XL750 Transalp and the all-new Honda NX500. Designed to make every ride smoother, more intuitive and more enjoyable, the system combines cutting-edge electronic control with the familiar feel of a traditional manual transmission.

Honda E-Clutch represents the latest evolution in motorcycle technology, blending the best characteristics of quickshifters, manual clutch operation and Honda's renowned Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). The result is a lightweight electronic clutch system that delivers seamless gear changes while preserving the engaging riding experience that motorcyclists enjoy.

A more effortless way to ride

One of the biggest advantages of the Honda E-Clutch is that it eliminates the need to operate the clutch lever during everyday riding. Riders simply use the gear lever to shift up or down, while the electronic system manages clutch engagement automatically.

Whether pulling away from a standstill, navigating stop-start city traffic or accelerating through winding roads, the system delivers smooth, consistent gear changes while eliminating the possibility of engine stalling. This makes riding less demanding for newer riders while also reducing fatigue for experienced motorcyclists during longer journeys or daily commutes.

Manual control whenever you want it

Although Honda E-Clutch automates clutch operation, riders remain fully in control. The clutch lever can still be used exactly as it would on a conventional motorcycle whenever preferred, with the system automatically resuming operation shortly afterwards.

For riders who prefer a completely traditional experience, the Honda E-Clutch can also be switched off via the handlebar controls, allowing the motorcycle to operate exactly like a conventional manual transmission.

Technology designed around the rider

The intelligent system continuously monitors factors such as vehicle speed, engine speed, throttle position and gear selection to ensure precise clutch engagement in every riding situation.
Honda has also given riders the ability to personalise the system through three selectable shift-feel settings. Hard, Medium and Soft, which can be independently adjusted for both upshifts and downshifts. The system can even prompt riders to select a lower gear when it detects that the current gear is too high for the motorcycle's speed.

Built for South African riding conditions

Honda Motor Southern Africa has selected two models that perfectly showcase the benefits of the new technology.

The 2026 Honda XL750 Transalp is designed for riders who enjoy long-distance touring, adventure riding and exploring gravel roads. Honda E-Clutch helps reduce rider fatigue while improving control across varied terrain.

The 2026 Honda NX500 brings the technology to a versatile everyday motorcycle, making urban commuting even more comfortable while also giving newer riders additional confidence on weekend adventures.

A new chapter in motorcycle innovation

According to Junya Ono, Large Project Leader at Honda Motor Co., Ltd, Honda E-Clutch has been developed to make riding both more enjoyable and more accessible.
"Our Honda E-Clutch is designed to offer motorcyclists a new kind of experience that can make their riding even more fun and exciting. It also adds peace of mind and comfort to town riding or the daily commute."

The arrival of Honda E-Clutch in South Africa reflects Honda's continued commitment to rider-focused innovation, giving motorcyclists greater flexibility, confidence and enjoyment regardless of their experience level.
